Dots sit on the centre of a town or city (or a US ZIP code), never a street address. Your location is looked up on our own server and never sent to an outside service — the map tiles come from OpenFreeMap, which only sees which part of the world you're viewing. City data from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).
